There’s one word that should never describe a business owner… especially in the fitness industry: “Lazy” — If you want to scale your business, leadership habits matter.

I know because I used to be called “lazy” when I first started my business. The people who called me that knew me best… and they were right. I was.

In this interview with Brent Weaver on the Digital Agency Show, I explain how I went from “Lazy” to “GSD” (Get Sh*t Done) so I could grow and scale my business.

Leadership Habit #1: Learn

Every business owner should make learning a daily habit, especially if you want to scale your business.

Here’s the catch: You have to apply what you learn.

  • Read business and leadership books
  • Take online courses (we have a whole library specific to growing fitness studios with GSD 360)
  • Attend business conferences (when these are back on, get them on the calendar. IHRSA, GSDCON, etc.)

When we’re lazy, we’re filling our heads with useless junk, right? But, when we’re actively learning, we’re filling our heads with useful tools to grow our businesses.

One of my favorite books is by Jim Kwik. It’s called Limitless. Jim says people were always told what to learn but not how to learn.

“Somebody who reads a book and doesn’t apply it, they’re at no advantage over someone who’s illiterate.” – Jim Kwik

Make sure you’re applying what you learn so you can scale your business.

Leadership Habit #2: Mentors

One of the best things we can do is accept that we don’t know as much as we think we do.

There are great people that have knowledge we don’t have. Get with them, learn, and get some accountability. You’ll grow faster than you thought possible.

I have 6 mentors for different parts of my business and life. I can personally tell you that I wouldn’t be where I am today or on a track to where I want to be without them.

Mentors will absolutely help you scale your business faster and more efficiently.

Leadership Habit #3 to Scale Your Business: Beat The Sun Up

You’ll never regret beating the sun up.

If you start your day when it’s still dark outside, you’re setting yourself up for success.

Having an early morning routine has changed the way I do business. I feel like I get more done in the morning than most people do in a day.

Before, when I was called “lazy,” you couldn’t get me out of bed early. Forget it.

Now, it’s a game-changer.

I spoke with a gym owner recently and one of the things he told me is that there’s just not enough time in the day to get everything done.

The first thing I ask when a business owner says they don’t have time is what time they get up in the morning. This owner got up at 6:00 AM because that’s when his kids got up.

Every day for weeks I had him text me that he was awake and ready to GSD that day starting at 4:30 AM.

Before his kids would wake up at 6:00 AM, he’d already gone through an GSD 360 course to grow his gym, read 20 pages of a book, wrote his goals down, and set his day up for his business.

Implementing these 3 habits will help you scale your business just like it did for me.
