MINDBODY BOLD is a can’t-miss conference for studio owners and fitness professionals who are serious about growing their business. This will be my third year attending the conference, and each time it’s one of the highlights of my year.
If you’re still on the fence about whether or not to go, here are 5 reasons you MUST attend.
1. It’s incredibly niche
One thing I love about the MINDBODY BOLD conference is how much industry-specific information you’ll get.
There are a ton of other conferences out there for marketing and sales and customer service. But for the most part, they’re not focused on one single industry, so you have no idea if the data presented is coming from men’s products, or women’s products, or toys, or sports. Even most fitness-specific conferences really only focus on how to be a better trainer or coach, and leave out the business side of things.
The cool thing about MINDBODY BOLD is that it’s focused exclusively on the business of fitness and wellness, so all the information you get is stuff that you can truly use in your business at the highest level.
If you’re a studio owner who wants to grow your business through proven strategies and data, then you’ve got to put this conference on your calendar.
2. The speakers are must-see
One of the main draws of this conference is the amazing opportunity to learn from some of the best and brightest minds in the industry. Here are just a few of the speakers I’m looking forward to this year.
Every year MINDBODY does a great job of choosing keynote speakers who provide a unique perspective on fitness and business, including Magic Johnson, Jillian Michaels, and Arianna Huffington. But this year, the keynote speaker lineup is especially exciting:
Former First Lady Michelle Obama has a powerful message on leading by example and being involved in the community. And when you’re a local business that wants to attract people within 4-5 miles of your location — as nearly every fitness studio owner does — that’s an especially important practice to adopt.
Billie Jean King has reached the highest level of success in a very competitive market and has used that platform to make great strides for gender equality. Her incredible ability to stay focused on a niche and do everything that it takes to reach the top is something that I think we can all learn from.
And MINDBODY CEO Rick Stollmeyer built an entire company around the fitness and wellness industry because he was able to learn from each experience … from his very first to his 56-thousandth customer. His insights on what the best companies in the industry are doing — and what everyone else is doing — are invaluable. He shared some of those insights with me in Episode 027 of The GSD Show, and I can’t wait to hear what he’s learned since:
Whenever I go to a conference, I often find the breakout sessions to be the most valuable. Whereas the bigger presentations have be very general because the speaker is addressing the entire audience, breakout sessions can be more strategic. They’re smaller, more intimate groups that address a particular pain point and give a tactical approach to fixing it.
The State of the Industry session is one that I look forward to every year. In all the conferences I’ve been to, I’ve never seen another presentation that’s so niche and data-heavy. This session is led by MINDBODY staff and gives an in-depth look at industry-wide stats on things like:
- Value per customer
- Lifetime customer value
- And more.
This session is so important because as a business owner, you need to be able to understand where you fall within your market, identify which things you’re doing really well at and which things you’re not, and capitalize on what you’re doing right and fix what you’re doing wrong.
And you can’t do any of that unless you pay attention to the numbers.
Coach Mike’s breakout session (The “SEED” in You) is also one that promises to be super valuable. To be successful you MUST have a really good, strong mindset that can remain consistent even when faced with challenges, and Coach Mike is known for his ability to do that himself and inspire others to do so as well.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend Coach Mike’s session because this year I’ll also be a MINDBODY BOLD speaker, and our sessions happen to be scheduled for the same time on Day 2 of the conference. In this session, I’m debunking the belief that video marketing has to be complicated and expensive. The reality is that you can use video marketing very quickly, very effectively, and very cheaply to get really great results. In fact, more than 80% of Loud Rumor’s customers get much better results from video ads than from competing image ads.
Of course, these are just a few of the awesome speakers and sessions in store. Check out the entire conference agenda, including a brand-new track just for spas and salons, to choose which breakout sessions will be most valuable to you and your studio.
3. The networking opportunities are unbeatable
Between sessions, this conference provides an incredible opportunity for networking with other professionals in the industry.
First, you should find the speakers after their talks and learn as much from them as you can. Some of the best takeaways I’ve gotten from the 40+ conferences I’ve attended came not from the presentations, but from the conversations I had with the speakers afterward. And because they’re so deep into teacher mode from having just been on stage presenting, I usually walk away with an exact strategy that I can implement right away tailored to meet my own specific challenges.
Not enough people do this, but it’s a resource that everyone should utilize.
Next, pay a visit to the exhibit hall. Every vendor at the conference is there for a reason and there’s something you can learn from each of them. Whether or not you choose to use them in your business, it’s helpful to learn what tools exist so that you can compare what they do and what you’re doing now and decide if there’s room for improvement.
Speaking of vendors, swing by the Loud Rumor booth if you get a chance and say hi to the team.
And if you have time in your schedule, you may want to take one of the morning fitness classes that are offered before the sessions get underway. Pay attention to how the instructors get you motivated and pick up on the words and phrases they use to keep the energy up. You just might learn something new to implement in your studio.
4. It’s affordable, even for smaller studios
Regardless of your industry, if you want to be successful in business it’s important that you surround yourself with people who are investing in both themselves and their company.
Going to conferences is important from a learning aspect … but you’re not going just to sit in a class and learn. You’re going because you want to invest in yourself and in your business.
Fortunately, this conference is more of a time investment than a financial one. In fact, for most studios, if even a single new member signs up because you went home and implemented what you learned here, their membership fees make up the cost of your ticket.
General admission is only $499 until August 24, and if you want to bring some of your team members along so they can learn from the experience too, MINDBODY offers a 15% discount when you purchase 2 or more tickets.
5. It’s in sunny San Diego
If after reading all of the reasons above you’re still not convinced, maybe this will tempt you …
The conference is in an oceanfront hotel in sunny San Diego. Each day you can enjoy a catered lunch (courtesy of MINDBODY) while overlooking the bay, and after soaking up as much fitness industry knowledge as you possibly can, you can still hit the waves or catch some sun.
Every year my team and I save some time for the beach, and it’s a great way to fit in a mini vacation while also growing as a company.
So if you’re a business owner in the fitness industry, MINDBODY BOLD is THE conference for you to attend. Hope to see you there!
